The Marine Surveyor
A marine surveyor approaches the survey as an experienced "neutral" party to serve as an advocate for their client. Our only interest is to bring the full bearing of our experience to help the client to understand the condition of the vessel they are interested in and to help the client determine if the vessel will be suitable for their needs through a Marine Survey.
Captain Alex Humphrey, AMS
Captain Alex Humphrey is an Accredited Marine Surveyor (AMS) and an active member of the Society of Accredited Marine Surveyors (SAMS). He has manufacturer and retail sales history with over 40 years experience in the Marine Industry. He is experienced with Pre-purchase, Condition and Value, Insurance and Re-insurance, Finance, Catastrophe Claims, Repair Claims, Consultation, Vessel Delivery and “Hands-On” Instruction. Captain Alex Humphrey, AMS (Accredited Marine Surveyor) graduated from the Chapmans School of Seamanship, Yacht and Small Craft Surveying and is American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC) Standards Accredited.
Why do you need a Marine Survey?
Boat condition and boat value estimation. Damage assessment. Accident investigation. These are just a few of the many services that fall under the broad definition of marine survey. In its simplest terms, marine survey can be described as any fact-finding endeavor having to do with boats.
When a boat owner needs insurance, a boat appraisal is needed to determine the boats condition and value. When a boat or its cargo is damaged, a marine surveyor evaluates the extent of the loss and its cause.
In essence, a marine surveyor is a trained professional who acts as your eyes and ears in any assessment or investigation situation -- someone who makes sure accurate information is gathered correctly and impartially.

This covers structural integrity, electrical systems, the propulsion system, the fuel system, other machinery, navigation equipment, miscellaneous on-board systems, cosmetic appearance, electronics, and overall maintenance as well as an out-of-water inspection and a sea trial.

This inspection is performed so that the insurance company or bank can determine whether or not the vessel is an acceptable risk. They are interested in structural integrity and safety for its intended use. Most insurance companies require a survey on older boats. They will also want to know the vessel's fair market value.

Damage Inspection
The surveyor can be retained by an insurance company to determine the cause of a loss and determine the extent of loss related damage and may be asked to recommend repairs, review estimates, and determine the pre-loss value of a vessel. A vessel owner can retain a surveyor for the same purposes, but for the owner's behalf.

No job is to small or transport to far. Your boat will not be moved until a complete pre-transport survey is completed by a member of the Society of Accredited Marine
My crew and I will move your vessel safely and efficiently between any ports of call in the U.S, Bahamas, Canada, and Mexico or move it from slip to slip in your marina. Your boat will not be moved until a complete pre-transport survey is completed by a member of the Society of Accredited Marine Surveyors to insure the safety of the crew and the seaworthiness of the vessel making the voyage. Inspections are performed to USCG regulations, ABYC standards, and generally accepted seamanship practices.
