The Marine Surveyor

A marine surveyor approaches the survey as an experienced "neutral" party to serve as an advocate for their client. Our only interest is to bring the full bearing of our experience to help the client to understand the condition of the vessel they are interested in and to help the client determine if the vessel will be suitable for their needs through a Marine Survey.

Why do you need a Marine Survey?

Boat condition and boat value estimation. Damage assessment. Accident investigation. These are just a few of the many services that fall under the broad definition of marine survey. In its simplest terms, marine survey can be described as any fact-finding endeavor having to do with boats.

When a boat owner needs insurance, a boat appraisal is needed to determine the boats condition and value. When a boat or its cargo is damaged, a marine surveyor evaluates the extent of the loss and its cause.

In essence, a marine surveyor is a trained professional who acts as your eyes and ears in any assessment or investigation situation -- someone who makes sure accurate information is gathered correctly and impartially.

Types of Marine Surveys

Pre-Purchase

image10

This is the most comprehensive type of inspection, and is strongly advised when purchasing a new or used vessel. Condition and overall operation of the vessel should be examined. This covers structural integrity, electrical systems, the propulsion system, the fuel system, other machinery, navigation equipment, miscellaneous on-board systems, cosmetic appearance, electronics, and overall maintenance as well as an out-of-water inspection and a sea trial.

Insurance & Finance Condition and Value

image11

This inspection is performed so that the insurance company or bank can determine whether or not the vessel is an acceptable risk. They are interested in structural integrity and safety for its intended use. Most insurance companies require a survey on older boats. They will also want to know the vessel's fair market value.

Damage Inspection

image12

The surveyor can be retained by an insurance company to determine the cause of a loss and determine the extent of loss related damage and may be asked to recommend repairs, review estimates, and determine the pre-loss value of a vessel. A vessel owner can retain a surveyor for the same purposes, but for the owner's behalf.

Specialty Surveys

Expert Witness

An expert witness is a person whose opinion by virtue of education, training, certification, skills or experience, is accepted by the judge as an expert. The judge may consider the witness's specialized (scientific, technical or other) opinion about evidence or about facts before the court within the expert's area of expertise, referred to as an "expert opinion".

Insurance Claims

This inspection is performed so that the insurance company or bank can determine whether or not the vessel is an acceptable risk. They are interested in structural integrity and safety for its intended use. Most insurance companies require a survey on older boats. They will also want to know the vessel's fair market value.

Catastrophe (CAT) Insurance Claims

Captain Humphrey , AMS has traveled the Gulf Coast from Texas to Florida, New York to the Florida Keyes handling Catastrophe Insurance Claims for companies such as State Farm, USAA Travelers, York Risk, ACE/Chubb after Hurricane Katrina, Wilma, Ike, Gustav, Sandy, Harvey and the latest Hurricane, Irma.

Boat and Yacht Delivery

image13

My crew and I will move your vessel safely and efficiently between any ports of call in the U.S,  Bahamas, Canada, and Mexico or move it from slip to slip in your marina.  No job is to small or transport to far.  Your boat will not be moved until a complete pre-transport survey is completed by a member of the Society of Accredited Marine Surveyors to insure the safety of the crew and the seaworthiness of the vessel making the voyage.  Inspections are performed to USCG regulations, ABYC standards, and generally accepted seamanship practices.

Instruction and Vessel Handling

image14

If you are in need of training, be it boat handling skills, navigation equipment usage, general seamanship, or assistance passing a Coast Guard exam, I can be of assistance.  Powerboat Squadron and Coast Guard Auxiliary courses are excellent, but if you want a more in-depth and personalized training we can work out a program to suit your specific needs.  A combination of theory and practical application will help you out in tough situations and give others confidence in your decision making abilities.

Captain Assist

image15

If you are planning a voyage and want additional experienced crew members or chartering for hire and require a licensed captain to be aboard I can help.  I will do all in my control in order that you and your family have a safe, memorable boating experience.  I also have experience in performing pre-purchase, and post retrofit sea trials both at the controls and as crew.  As a qualified Marine Surveyor, I can help you insure that your planned voyage will be undertaken on a safe, seaworthy craft or that your repairs are being performed in a cost effective and prudent manner.
